How to use the Visual Editor

In this article, you’ll learn how to use the Visual Editor to edit your translations, manage translation quality, and update SEO metadata.

The Visual Editor allows you to edit translations directly on a preview copy of your website. This makes it easier to locate content and see changes in context before they appear on your live site.

1. How can I edit my translations?

1. To access the Visual Editor, go to your Weglot Dashboard > Visual Editor.
2. Click Start editing.

You will be redirected to a copy of your website where you can navigate freely and switch languages directly from the Visual Editor interface.

Please note that some features relying on cookies or dynamic behavior may not work in this environment, such as:

• Add-to-cart actions

• Login systems

• Cookie consent banners

• Some dynamic or personalized content

To edit a translation, click the blue pencil icon next to the text.

If the blue pencil does not appear, you can use the following shortcut:

• Mac: Option + left click

• Windows: Alt + left click

A translation box will open, allowing you to edit the text.

You can also switch the target language directly from this box.

Once done, the “Manual translation” label will appear, along with the green confirmation message indicating that the changes have been saved.

After finishing your edits, refresh your live website to see the changes. If they do not appear immediately, perform a hard refresh or open the page in an incognito window.

Hard refresh shortcuts:

• Mac: cmd + shift + R

• Windows: ctrl + F5

You can also use the URL bar at the top left of the Visual Editor to directly access a specific page.

You can also access the Visual Editor directly from a specific translation.

To do so:

1. Go to your Weglot Dashboard.
2. Open your project and access the Translation section.
3. Select a language to display the list of generated translations.
4. Click on a translation entry.

A panel will open on the right side. In the URLs section, you’ll find a link that redirects you directly to that translation in the Visual Editor. This allows you to edit the translation in context on the relevant page without manually navigating through the site.

This method is especially useful if you already know which translation needs to be updated and want to access it quickly in the Visual Editor.

2. How can I manage translation quality?

When using the Visual Editor, you will notice highlighted content blocks.

At the top of the screen, you can select a language and filter translations by quality. 

This allows you to quickly identify:

• Automatically generated translations

• Manually edited translations

• Professionally translated content

When a quality filter is selected, only the relevant blocks are highlighted, making it easier to review or update specific translations.

Below, you can see examples of automatically generated translations highlighted in red and manually edited translations highlighted in blue, making it easier to distinguish between them at a glance.

3. How can I edit meta tags and SEO content?

The Visual Editor also allows you to edit SEO-related content such as meta titles and meta descriptions.

To do this, click the SEO tags icon located near the URL at the top of the screen.

A panel will open displaying the meta tags available for the current page. You can edit them using the same workflow as standard text translations. Once done, the changes will apply to the translated version of the page.

4. How can I use the Weglot Editor Chrome extension (beta)?

In addition to the Visual Editor available in the Weglot Dashboard, you may also test the Weglot Editor Chrome extension (beta).

This extension allows you to edit translations directly on the live website, without opening the Visual Editor from the Weglot Dashboard. It can be especially useful in certain cases, such as:

• Non-public or restricted environments

• Content that is not editable through the Dashboard Visual Editor

The extension is currently in beta and can be installed from the Chrome Web Store:

How can I use the extension?

To start editing translations with the extension:

1. Log in using the Weglot Editor Chrome extension.

   

2. Click the Start editing button to enable translation editing on the website.

   

3. Browse the site and edit translations directly in context.

4. When you are done, click the Stop editing button to end the translation editing session.

   

This will disable the editing mode and return the website to its normal behavior.
