How does translation memory work?

In this article, you'll learn how to use the translation memory feature while using Weglot.

Note that this feature is only available when subscribed to the Extended Plan and above.

  1. What is translation memory?

Translation memory is a linguistic database that stores manual or professional translations of the existing content. It is used to search for translation matches when translating new documents.

  1. How does translation memory work?

Translation memory scans the translation list to find sentences similar to those that need to be translated. It compares the text to be translated with the translations already stored and calculates a percentage of similarity. If a match is found, the corresponding translation can be reused, thereby speeding up the translation process.

  1. Which types of translations are stored in translation memory?

Translation memory stores translations done manually or using professional translators. This ensures a variety of styles and formulations to meet different translation needs.

  1. How does translation memory handle cases where a reused sentence has different original content?

If a reused sentence is identical, but the original content is different, it is counted as two separate translations in the translation memory. This ensures the accuracy and relevance of translations by taking into account the specific context of each document.

  1. How to active the translation memory feature?

Go to Weglot Dashboard > General

When manually editing some translations into your Translations List, the feature will automatically propose suggestions when possible (whenever the content is similar to other translation(s))

After editing the translations, you should see the new translations.

If that's not the case, try clearing your browser cache and refreshing the page to see the new changes on your website.
